Three Lions Coach Reveals His Vision: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

In the past, the England assistant coach was playing at a lower division club. Today, he is focused supporting the head coach win the World Cup in the upcoming tournament. The road from athlete to trainer commenced as an unpaid coach for Accrington's Under-16s. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He realized his purpose.

Staggering Ascent

The coach's journey has been remarkable. Beginning in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a name with creative training and excellent people skills. His club career led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, and he held international positions with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, he's fully immersed, the peak according to him.

“All begins with a vision … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You envision the goal and then you plan: ‘How can we achieve it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We aim for World Cup victory. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a systematic approach so we can to maximize our opportunities.”

Obsession with Details

Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour all the time, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their methods involve mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and building a true team. He stresses “Team England” and rejects terms including "pause".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a rest,” he explains. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and where they're challenged that it’s a breather.”

Driven Leaders

He characterizes himself and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We aim to control every aspect of the game,” Barry affirms. “We want to conquer the whole ground and we dedicate most of our time to. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead of changes but to beat them and innovate. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We get 50 days together with the team before the World Cup finals. We must implement a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it during that time. It’s to take it from concept to details to know-how to performance.

“To build a methodology for effective use in the 50 days, we must utilize the entire 500 days we'll have since we took the job. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships among them. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

Final Qualifiers

Barry is preparing ahead of the concluding matches in the qualifying campaign – against Serbia at Wembley and in Albania. The team has secured their place at the finals after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. Yet, no let-up is planned; on the contrary. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.

“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy should represent all the positives from the top division,” Barry says. “The athleticism, the adaptability, the robustness, the work ethic. The England jersey must be difficult to earn but comfortable to have on. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.

“To make it light, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to play freely similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action.

“There are morale boosts for managers at both ends of the pitch – building from the defense, pressing from the front. However, in midfield in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared these days. They can organize – defensive shapes. We are focusing to increase tempo across those 24 metres.”

Thirst for Improvement

His desire to get better is relentless. When he studied for his pro license, he was worried about the presentation, especially as his class included stars such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he entered difficult settings he could find to improve his talks. Including a prison locally, and he trained detainees in a football drill.

He earned his license as the best in his year, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined 16,154 throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard included convinced and he recruited the coach on to his staff at Stamford Bridge. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that the club got rid of nearly all assistants while keeping Barry.

His replacement at Chelsea was Tuchel, and shortly after, they secured European glory. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained under Graham Potter. However, when Tuchel returned with Bayern, he recruited Barry from Chelsea to rejoin him. The FA view them as a partnership like previous management pairs.
