Exactly 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story film was released, establishing the animation giant as a major animation studio and introducing audiences to iconic figures like Woody (the actor) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now famous worldwide.
Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but leaving viewers wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Spooks the Gang
In the teaser reveals the young girl — who inherited the toy collection when he grew up — getting a latest toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie acquires her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.
Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the characters seem to view it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it probably is.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4
An element the teaser doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (the actress), journeying with a fair and helping prize toys find good homes.
Certainly, Pixar will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have come back with Woody. And what about Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?
Continuity from the Last Installment
Fortunately, some elements are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his new life was pass his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser displays the badge pinned to her shirt.
Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the toys.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
