Space Traveler Discloses Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the journey.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the flight, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.
The team of pioneers also comprised experts in various fields.
The venture behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a Amazon founder.
