A uniquely yellow-colored residential building visible behind assisted us locate the footage.
Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs circulated this morning that show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the site from which the images were from was based on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
