Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
