Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture at Spectators

The NFL has imposed a hefty $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward fans during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.

Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“It was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further emphasized that the gesture was completely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the wrong digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”

Historical Precedent for Owner Fines

This is not the first time an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:

  • Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
  • Former Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.

Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated net worth of around $16bn, making the penalty easily payable for the wealthy proprietor.

Recent Controversies and Public Spotlight

The incident follows a contentious preseason for Jones, who faced significant criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team traded key pass rusher Parsons to the Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent figure in a streaming series that explored his influence in building the Cowboys into the globe’s most valuable athletic organization, despite its modern-era championship drought.

The league’s action to penalize Jones underscores its continuing effort to maintain professional conduct among all team officials, irrespective of their status or financial standing.
